Assignment 1 - 3
In "What is a City," Mumford uses the word "plexus" to describe cities as an interaction of social and cultural factors and a physical fixed site. When we read this, we immediately thought of Roma Cafe because it is a site that is usually associated and filled with dirty hobos, or what we refer to as "counter-culture." These people dress differently and seem to defy the college atmosphere. There tends to be 1 or 2 people with a pet that hasn't been taken care of or washed in over a month. They occupy Roma Cafe, a local common ground on the corner of 13th and College, which is also a very popular spot for college kids. By being part of this counter-culture in Boulder, they aim to support a less corporate lifestyle and business such as Roma Cafe, and most of the time detract most students from even going near the business. Roma Cafe has been able to survive because it is now classified as the common meeting ground and culture for these smelly and lackadaisical hobos.
